What do all you do when those haters are around? Just ignore them or do you kick thier damn asses till they cry. If you got any funny stories I wouldnt mind hearing. One time this jock came by and said skaters are gay. So of course my friend said "well i think white shoe wearing, clown hat supporting, anal rapest are gay to" and he just kept on walking. I laughed for hours.

i remember this one time about 16 years ago a few of us were doing some street skating on a loading dock and this group older jocks swarmed in on us shouting like we were all going to die .. i was thinking shit, there like 10 of us and 3 of them were going to kick thier ass .. , well as it turned out all my friends ran away and the jocks were way way bigger than me .. lol

so there i was standing there defiant as these jocks surrounded me .. and to my surprise they just said something to the effect of .. tell your friends they'r wimps, and they gave me props for not running away and left me untouched.

And who is the hater in that story? All the people who continue the habit of making "gay" an insult?

Skating is probably one of the most acceptably "rebellious" things to do today. It's present in the rock videos that those "jocks" watch and in the advertising they subscribe to.

And guess what, some skaters ARE gay. Grow up.

somtimes i love to hate on little skate rats when im driving by and see them i yell shit like "skaters are gay!" or "do a kickflip poser!" and i chuckle because im a skater and ive had to deal with it for 10 years. so its ironic. im just driving out the weaklings.

or sometimes if i see a kid skating i talk to them like i dont know shit about skating. i ask awesome questions like "whats your best trick?" or "can you do 720's?" its all about acting stupid.

i've never been the subject of haters but I bet that's because I'm a chick on a skateboard in a skirt (yes, I've attempted to skate in a skirt and flip flops...what a disaster). I just wanted to say that I think it's funny that jocks "hate" because I bet they all own Tony Hawk's pro-skater whatever version and they all like to hassle each other on who can do the best "trick" and who can get the highest score. It's so lame. And you know they all watch Jackass and shit when most of those folks are all skaters! Lame!

If I were to ever get hassled, I think I'd just do my best to beat the MF-er senseless with my board... of course, I run the risk of breaking it their fat head and then i'd be the one fucked because I don't have any $$ to buy a new deck :(

Nah, I'm the same way Robb. That's why I said I was thankful I got out of high school a while ago. It all seems a bit juvenille now to get worried about that kind of BS.

I, too, have skated in a skirt...funny, nobody hassles the chicks in the skirts...

My nephew skates...he's 15...he doesn't get in trouble because he's off too busy skating to be doing antying else..the only trouble he has gotten in was for skating in an empty school parking lot...No cars around, no other kids...and he gets hassled for skating by security...What kind of sense does that make?

If he hurts himself, the school could be liable, so they like to try avoiding potential lawsuits by someone hurt on their property. They also want to avoid getting their property "vandalized" by wax and chipped curbs, etc.

:-/ I had to go to court once, for "skateboarding in a public skatepark, without a helmet". Everyone had been going up to the bench for DUI's, domestic disputes, etc. I got up there and the judge read it and everyone just chuckled... I got a fooking misdemeanor for that though!

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Maybe a fine or something lame but a misdemeanor? Maybe you should have skated in a skirt ;)

Do you have any idea how much a city can be sued for a crack on the sidewalk if a skater hurts themselve?

Laws are there for a reason. People will still skate, but this way the city can point to the law and say that categorically, no one should skate on sidewalks or on public property.

If the officer HADN'T enforced the law, and then this kid cracked his skull on some pothole, the city would have been SLAMMED.

'the city would have been SLAMMED.'

no, the city 'could' have been SLAMMED. it's up to the individual who was injured for their own mistake to make that choice to take action.

anyone that's been skating for a while knows that suing the city would be self-defeating for the future of skateboarding in that area and that it really isn't the city's fault. it's why the skateparks got all closed up in the 80's and most street spots became a bust in the 90's.

but, then again alot of humans are dumb and greedy.

You're joking. A woman received a settlement for spilling coffee that was "too hot" on herself.

This is a lawsuit society. You can sue someone if your kid tresspasses and drowns in a pool on THEIR property if they don't have a fence around their pool.

Most people I know don't sue places because they hurt themselves by something they were doing...I'm not saying it doesn't happen...I know it does, but c'mon...some people are just lame...getting injured is a part of skateboarding life, right? It's dangerous, right? Too many people are sue happy...I was clumsy and tripped in the grocery store and fell on my ass...so many people ran up to me, scared to death I might sue the store...I was so emabarrassed I wanted to sneak out and never be seen again...I had a bruise on my ass the size of Alaska...suing the grocery store for my clumsiness never even occurred to me...

An intelligent responsible person doesn't sue just for the hell of it, you're right, if it's your fault, it's your fault. People should sue only for gross negligence.

But the reality is very different. And for an idea of how many intelligent responsible people there are in this country, take a drive on any highway.

An hour in the car and I'll support taking away everyone's right to use spoons.

In the particular case mentioned, he was in a public skate park (or so he says) and most public places that have the potential for injury have signs posted saying "do whatever you're doing at your own risk". Cities and governments put those signs up to limit their liability.

At any rate, my confusion is that I thought the helmet law only extended to those under 18 and that if you're considered a legal adult, it's your own damn fault if you crack your skull open (within reason, i.e. if the city wasn't maintaining the skate parks (giant cracks, asbestos leaking or something) then it could arguably be their fault for injury)

Well no... The issue here is insurance. Even though it's a public skate park, the city still has to have insurance, just in case anything happens and people try to sue the city... They have their asses covered. That's what the insurance is for.

Then the insurance comapnies will usually state that all participants have to wear helmets and/or pads... Just to reduce the possible risk of injury, thereby lessening the chances of a lawsuit.

In those kinds of cases, I'm not sure, but I think anyone hurt without the required pads may not be covered by the insurance as well, so there's an additional reason to enforce this.

I have to admit, I always hoped a security guard or something would come over to me, right after I had REALLY hurt myself on their property, but continued to skate or hang around. See if they let me stay just so I don't sue. Lol, yeah, I'm immature at times... It's fun.

years ago a car full of shitheads thought it would be funny to yell some shit cant really remember what it was but it was along the lines of skate fags. so i pushed as hard as i could to catch up. they stopped at the stop sign so grabbed my board and threw it at there car. keep in mind at this point i was very far from anyone with me. the funny thing is they got so freaked out they blew through the stop sign. so funny cause at the time i weighed next to nothing.

What is up with all the homophobia among skaters? If skaters used "nigger" or "kike" or "spic" would that be tolerated? Fuck no...

I have been skating since 1975, when I stared I was 8. Everyone thought skateboarding was gay then, I got guys trying to beat me up and chase me all the time. Little did they know I was teaching myself to skate so I could get away from them. I am gay, I do skate and I have clocked speeds most only dream of. I dont give a shit to compatition as it never was a true skaters agenda. Everyone thinks we all want to be like Dogtown crew but we dont. Some of us can and DO think for ourselves, create our own style and journey. Skateboarding is a spiritual thing to me, always has been. As for the homophobia in the skateboard world, I dont care I dont hang out with assholes who judge instead of ride.
